Features of Run Block Optimizer Algorithm

The Run Block Optimizer algorithm has the following features:

  • Run Block Optimizer performs checks first.
    • Before commencing a runcut, the Block Optimizer algorithm performs a check to ensure that it is possible to create a legal solution (using the parameters you have typed).
    • If it is not possible to produce a legal solution, an error message, which explains why a legal solution cannot be created, is shown. The error needs to be resolved before a runcut can be produced.
  • Run Block Optimizer does not produce illegal runs.
    • If the runs are being costed by Blockbuster as illegal, it is because the parameters on the Block Optimizer tab do not match the Blockbuster parameters.
    • Runs produced in the initial runcut will be legal according to the Run Block Optimizer parameters, so to make them legal in the eyes of Blockbuster, the Run Block Optimizer parameters must be changed to more closely match the Blockbuster costings.
    • When your parameters are set up correctly the initial runcut will be legal.
  • Run Block Optimizer produces a minimum number of runs the first time.
    • By default, the Run Block Optimizer algorithm produces the minimum number of runs (using the parameters you have typed) for the runcut at its first attempt. Only one runcut needs to be performed using Run Block Optimizer to get the best result for your parameters. Blockbuster is different in that the work needs to be recut using the same parameters until the same result is achieved on consecutive cuts.
  • Run Block Optimizer produces the best solution it can.
    • Run Block Optimizer produces the best solution it can (using the current parameters) in a single pass. If you are not satisfied with the result, you must change your parameters before doing a new runcut.
  • Parameters do not have to be changed.
    • Once the Run Block Optimizer parameters produce successful runcuts, you do not have to alter them if the underlying data changes. A change to the relief opportunities information does not require a change to the parameters, however, if the union agreements change, you must review the parameters again.
