About Mobile Computers

A mobile data terminal (MDT) or a mobile computer facilitates a real-time data connection for communication between drivers and the dispatch center as the drivers’ runs progress.

These devices are two-way interface terminals that reside in the vehicles. The two main functions of the mobile computer are sending and receiving trip data. The data is transmitted through the communication system to the dispatch center, logging data of each event. This data is made available to the dispatchers to monitor the day’s activities in real time with the minimal use of voice radio.

Mobile computers provide the following benefits:

  • Minimize voice radio traffic.
  • Facilitate real-time same day dispatch.
  • Automatically log accurate times, mileage, and fares so that minimal manual data entry and reconciliation is required after the day is complete.
  • Help increase quality of service by providing the dispatcher with accurate up-to-the-minute information on how the day is progressing, giving the dispatcher advance warning signs when routes are running late. Corrective action may be taken earlier, thus increasing on time performance.
  • Provide for greater accuracy and fewer communication errors when last minute changes are communicated over the radio. This saves time and enables dispatchers the opportunity to be proactive or attend to priority exceptions.
