About the Speed Wizard
The Speed Wizard is used to define different speeds for vehicles traveling on different street segments. Speeds are used in products such as PASS to estimate the time required for traveling from one location to another.
Before speeds can be associated with different vehicles and streets, the Speed Wizard must be used to create two types of ancillary data:
- Vehicle classes - Each vehicle class represents a type of vehicle
that travels at certain speeds. For example, classes can be created for buses and vehicles,
as well as for bicycle and pedestrian vehicles to generate biking and walking instructions.
The system includes a Default vehicle class.Note: For PASS, the Schedule Server application currently recognizes only the Default vehicle class; PASS users do not require other vehicle classes.
- Speed types - Each speed type represents a road type that requires a different speed than other road types.
Default speed types are Freeways, Arterial, Collectors and Residential. Additional speed types can be created.
Average speeds can be specified for each vehicle class and speed type combination. Speeds can apply on specific days of the week, dates, and times. For example, buses can be specified to travel on freeways at 41 miles per hour on weekdays between 7 AM and 8 PM, and 47 miles per hour on weekends and on weekdays between 8 PM and 7 AM.
A speed type can also be specified for each street segment on a map. For example, vehicles can be specified to travel at their freeway speeds on some segments and at their residential speeds on other segments.
Different speed types can also be specified for traveling in opposite directions on the same road. For example, vehicles traveling in one direction on a street can be specified to move at their freeway speeds, while vehicles traveling in the opposite direction can be specified to move at collector speeds.
