About Elastic Demand Forecast Indexes

In addition to the Base Demand Forecast Index, additional values can be defined per demographic data field to refine the demand forecast further.

These indexes are:

  • Fare Level - Cost to the passenger
  • Service Frequency - How often a vehicle passes a stop/point
  • Journey Duration - Includes. the time that it takes a passenger to walk to a stop/point, wait for a vehicle, and travel to a destination
  • Reliability - How closely the service adheres to the schedule
  • Vehicle Type - Quality of the vehicle in service

These values are considered to be elastic because changes in them affect different portions of the population in different ways. For example, an increase in service frequency would presumably influence a person with a vehicle to use transit more than a person with no vehicle because a person with no vehicle is subject to whatever the transit schedule is, frequent or infrequent. Conversely, a change in fare would potentially affect a person with no vehicle more so than a person with a vehicle.

Using this example, the following table shows some potential values for the elastic value of service frequency.
Field Name Description Service Frequency Index

VEHICL_1 Households with one vehicle .5
VEHICL_2 Households with two vehicles .75
