Defining Passenger Fare Types

Fare types are defined in PASS ancillary data.

About this task

The rate frame allows you to set a flat rate or define the rate by time, distance, or zone. Adjustments can be applied if fares are defined by zone.

Procedure

  1. Click File > Ancillary Data > Para > Pricing > Fare Types.
  2. To create a passenger fare type:
  3. Type an numerical ID.
If the field is empty, the system places your entry in the numeric sequence of the fare type list.
  4. In the Abbr field, type a three-letter code for the passenger fare type.
  5. In the Description field, type a description of the fare type.
  6. If you are calculating fares by zones, select a Zone Type.
If you are calculating fares for travel within and between zones, make sure that you have defined zones (polygons).
  7. (For MDTs) In the Code field, enter the code.
This determines the order in which the fare types will appear on MDT or DriverMate devices.
  8. From the Calc Type drop-down list, select a calculation method:
    Calculated
The system calculates the fare for the passenger when a trip is booked.
This option is selected by default.
    Interface
The system uses an external trip planning system for fare calculation.

With interface faring, the external trip planning system searches for a fixed route solution that matches the trip criteria (such as latitude and longitude coordinates of the trip’s origin and destination, requested date, and requested times) specified in Trip Booking. The trip planning system then calculates the fixed route fare associated with the solution. This fare amount is the basis for the fare that is applied in Trip Booking when the interface fare type is selected.

    Manual
The system allows you to manually enter a fare for this fare type in the Leg Detail frame of Trip Booking.
  9. To round calculated fares, select the Round Fare check box, enter the amount to which fares are to be rounded in the Accuracy field (for example, $0.50), and then select the rounding method from the Direction drop-down list:
    Up
Rounds the fare up according to the specified amount. For example, with an Accuracy amount of $0.50, a fare of $3.04 is rounded up to $3.50.
    Down
Rounds the fare down to the specified amount. For example, with an Accuracy amount of

$0.50, a fare of $3.84 is rounded down to $3.50.

    Closest
Rounds the fare to the nearest specified amount. For example, with an Accuracy amount of $0.50, a fare of $3.04 is rounded to $3.00 and a fare of $2.94 is rounded to $3.00.
  10. In the Fare Mode frame, select the Passenger option.
Fare mode determines the kind of fare type being created. Passenger fare types are charged to the client by the site and provider fare types are charged to the site by the provider.
  11. In the Rate frame, type the rate(s) by which you calculate the fare type.
You can use a combination of rates, but the fare amounts are cumulative.
Rates can be defined for different date intervals.
  12. If you are using zone faring, go to the Adjustment frame.
Adjustments are used when, for example, you have two zones side by side. To travel five miles within zone 1 costs $5.00, but to travel two miles from zone 1 to zone 2 costs $8.00. An adjustment allows you to arrive at reasonable fares that factor in both zones and distance. In the Same Zone field, enter the maximum distance the client can travel within the same zone before an adjustment occurs, for example, 10 miles.
  13. In the Add field, enter the amount you want to add to the fare once the Same Zone distance has been reached, for example, $1.50. In this case, $1.50 is added to the fare for trips over ten miles within the same zone.
  14. In the Different Zones field, set the minimum limit between zones.
    For example, 4 miles.
  15. In the Subtract field, enter the amount to be subtracted from the fare if the trip crosses a zone limit, according to the Different Zones field.
For example, if the value is $1.50, then the system will subtract $1.50 from the fare for trips under 4 miles between two zones.
  16. Click Add.
The fare type is added to the list.
  17. Click Close.
