electronic fare system
Cashless environment where passengers are able to pay for fares using Smart Cards, credit cards, or cell phones. It simplifies accounting processes and gives customers more payment options.
electronic manifest
Daily work and routes are automatically sent to their operator's in-vehicle computer.
This eliminates paper manifests and accounts for real-time schedule changes.
electronic on-board recorder
Electronic device attached to a commercial motor vehicle used to automatically record the amount of time the vehicle is driven.
emergency mode
Vehicle operating mode used when an operator or Dispatch downgrades a covert alarm event (if allowed), or when an operator presses the overt alarm button on an MDT. Vehicles in emergency mode are polled at a high rate (for example, 10 seconds).
employee transaction

end wait
Time an operator waits for transportation to the garage from a node (or vice versa) at the end of a shift. Used in conjunction with travel time.

engine control unit (ECU)
An embedded system that manages engine performance and operation in a motor vehicle.
Enterprise Asset Management (EAM)
Combination of software, systems, and services used to maintain and control operational assets and equipment.
Trapeze EAM involves work management, asset maintenance, planning and scheduling, supply chain management, business intelligence (reporting), and capital planning.
Enterprise Portal (EP)
Web-based, end-user interface for the base EAM logic that provides screens and functionality to configure the application.
enterprise purchasing
- Process of creating requisitions, requests for bids, responses to requests for bids, and purchase orders.
- Portal within EAM.
estimated time
The time that an event (pick-up, drop-off, break, pull-in, pull-out) is most likely to occur. Estimated times are determined by the early and late tolerances surrounding the schedule times. Estimated times vary according to the progress of the live schedule.

exchange vehicle
exempt service
Non-revenue generating, non-deadhead fixed route services omitted from National Transit Database (NTD) report calculations. This may include:
- Services performed by vehicles that don't collect revenue. For example, maintenance, supervisor, and administration vehicles.
- Training runs before revenue service, maintenance tests, school bus services, or charter services.

express service
Transit service that provides higher speeds and fewer stops than are typically found in other parts of the system or on the same route in local service.
extension
- One or several letters at the end of a file name.
File name extensions follow a period and indicate the type of information stored in the file. For example, workspace files saved with the .twsp extension.
- Additional product functionality.
The extensions tool () defines the available Trapeze6 Client Shell menus, screen modules, and directory aliases.
extraboard
Reserve list of operators for a given operational day.
extra run
Block created between sign-up periods that isn't scheduled daily. These blocks are typically operated by extraboard operators until they're bid on and permanently scheduled during the next sign-up period.
extra work
Work scheduled in addition to regularly scheduled runs. For example, special, standby, or casual work.
