O
object
- Item that can be selected and manipulated. For example, folders, reports, facts, and metrics.
- An abstract data type. For example, in PASS, when defining Administrative Units ancillary data and the administrative unit is applicable to a group of clients, the Client object type must be selected.
off-course
off days
The preset days that an employee is not scheduled to work. Typically, off days are considered as combinations when rostering. For example, Saturday/Sunday off; Sunday/Monday off; Monday/Wednesday off.
off-peak
Non-rush periods of the day when travel activity is generally lower and less transit service is scheduled.
See also peak time.
off-route
Status for a vehicle that's no longer following its route path.
off time
on-board device
Device attached to the in-vehicle computer. It becomes part of the mobile computing solution. For example, a receipt printer.
on-board time (OBT)
Period of time a client remains on-board a vehicle after pick-up and before drop-off. Typically used in PASS.
Maximum on-board time is defined in system properties and limits the amount of time a client can remain on-board a vehicle. A Max OBT can also be placed on individual trips in the Trip Booking screen, and Max OBT factors can be set in Schedule Administrator to override the general Max OBT in properties.
on-time
A vehicle crossing timepoints at the scheduled times.
See also Schedule Adherence.
on-time performance
Vehicle's ability to adhere to a schedule along a route.
open
(Used in UK) See tripper.
open architecture
Technology components that can be added to, upgraded, or swapped as needs grow and change.
This helps to extend the life cycle of the technology, minimizing costs.
open work
Work not currently assigned to an operator. Typically used in OPS.
operational day
Time period from first pull-out to last pull-in for a scheduled service day of the week. Typically used in OPS.
Operational days may be longer than 24 hours.
operator
Transit employee who drives a revenue transit vehicle.
Typically, a bus operator (not a train operator).
operator relief
Scheduled, on-route event where a new operator takes over the vehicle from the current operator.
orphan blocks
Blocks composed of only one or two trips. Typically, orphan blocks are added to other blocks to form a larger single block.
outstation
overload
Act of running multiple vehicles, staggered in time, over a section of a route that was originally scheduled for a single fixed route bus.
Typically, overloads aren't scheduled before the day begins and are done on-demand in real time. They help solve unexpected overcrowding (passenger overload) in scheduled vehicles by adding capacity either ahead or behind those vehicles. It's also used so late vehicles can drop off and turn back.
See also turnback.
overload vehicle
Additional, available, unscheduled vehicle dispatched to perform overlapping service on a section of a route either ahead of or behind the scheduled vehicle. This may be a vehicle from the yard or one about to pull in.
overt alarm
Alarm message sent from a mobile unit to Dispatch indicating an emergency situation.
The vehicle is placed in emergency mode when the operator presses the Overt Alarm button on their MDT and, optionally, selects an Emergency (priority canned) message.
over-the-air (OTA)
Real-time data message transmission to and from vehicles.
over-the-air programming (OTAP)
Ability to remotely update in-vehicle software and hardware.
Compared to manual programming, OTAP speeds updates, reduces fleet downtime, and minimizes costs.
owl
- Refers to the service operating during the late evening or night when passenger demand is at a minimum.
- Third shift runs, or runs that pull in after 2:00 AM.
In scheduling, owl work is morning work that pulls out after midnight.
In planning, owl trips serve 2:00 AM, 3:00 AM, and 4:00 AM lineups (when three or more buses are scheduled to meet at a specific place and time for customers to transfer among routes).
Owls are part of a broader period of trips between the midnight and 5:00 AM lineups, called late night/early morning service.
