About MDTs and Dispatch
A Mobile Data Terminal (MDT) is a device that provides a real-time data connection for live communication with drivers as their route progresses.
These devices are two-way interface terminals that reside in the vehicles. The two main functions of the MDT are sending and receiving data. The data is transmitted through radio to Dispatch, logging in the data of each stop.
Using MDTs provides the following advantages:
- Minimizes voice radio traffic.
- Facilitates real-time dispatching.
- Logs accurate times, mileage and fares so that minimal data entry and reconciliation is required after the day is complete.
- Provides dispatchers with current information in order to maintain on-time performance.
