Performance Types

Performance Types ancillary data specifies rules for tracking employee activities for the purpose of employee performance management. Activities include absences, incidents, complaints, and commendations.

For example, a performance type could specify that the system count absences in the past year to decide whether performance management activities should occur.

Performance types use either a fixed time period or a rolling window for tracking employee activities. The time period or rolling window determines how long the system looks back when tracking activities. For example, the system could look for particular incident types from the beginning of the year in a fixed time period or in the past nine months in a rolling window.

The system can track employee activities for performance management by occurrence or by performance points. The system can also track employee absences by hours.

Performance types are associated with values in the Performance Value field. Performance values are linked with Performance Penalty ancillary data, which in turn is linked with Performance Severity ancillary data.

Table 1. Performance Types Ancillary Data
Field Description
Calculation Method How the system tracks absences, incidents, or complaints for this rule.
  • Event. The system counts each documented occurrence separately.

For example, if the employee records a 1-day absence on May 3, another 1-day absence on May 4, and a two day absence spanning May 5–6, they're counted as 3 events.

  • Occurrence. A continuing absence is counted only once.

For example, if the employee is absent for a work week (5 days) it would be counted as 1 occurrence even if each day is entered separately. If there is a gap in the absences (for example, a day off), they still only count as a single occurrence so long as there is no intervening work day that the employee was present.

  • Point-based. The system tracks performance points accumulated for each absence, incident, or complaint.
  • Hours-based. The system tracks hours for this performance type.

In hours-based tracking, the system only counts absence hours that have been fully costed. The hours-based calculation method is only available for absence tracking.

Category Predefined category associated with the performance type.
  • Absences
  • Incidents
  • Customer Feedback
Default Rolling Timeframe Based on the Default Time Units value, the default length of the performance type's rolling time frame. (Only applicable if the performance type uses a rolling time frame.)
Default Time Units Specifies the time units used to measure the rolling time frame.
Description Description of the performance type.
Fixed Timeframe From Date If the performance type uses a fixed time period, specifies the start date of the fixed time period for the performance type.
Fixed Timeframe To Date If the performance type uses a fixed time period, specifies the start date of the fixed time period for the performance type.
Paid Time Flag

If the Calculation Method for the performance type is Hours Based and Paid Time Flag is selected, the system tracks paid time associated with the employee absence or activity when tracking hours for performance management.

If both Paid Time Flag and Unpaid Time Flag are selected, the system accumulates all hours associated with the employee activity.

Performance Action Group Performance Action ancillary group associated with the performance type.
Performance Type Name of the performance type.
Performance Value Performance value of each incident.

The OPS > Workforce Management > Performance > Performance Value Precision system property specifies the number of decimal places allowed for the performance value.

Skip Off Days If selected, the system doesn't count days off when tracking incidents for this performance type.
Unpaid Time Flag

If the Calculation Method for the performance type is Hours Based and Unpaid Time Flag is selected, the system tracks unpaid time associated with the employee absence or activity when tracking hours for performance management.

If both Paid Time Flag and Unpaid Time Flag are selected, the system tracks all hours associated with the employee activity.
